Public Claims Against GMO Salmon Approvals

A coalition of North American citizens has filed claims against the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services and the Canadian Ministry of Justice objecting to the sale of unlabeled genetically engineered salmon for human consumption.  The group is seeking regulatory relief by demanding mandatory labeling of the fish before it is sold.

The non-denominational coalition based its claim on moral and ethical grounds. Claimants believe their claim carries social authority and legitimacy, while serving as a vehicle to reinforce common sense. According to Mark Deuitch, founder of  PeopleClaim, which filed the claims, “To deny the claim, respondents would have to establish that claimants have no right to know what is in their food.”
